NSN AKWA IBOM STATE CHAPTER COMMEMORATES WORLD HYPERTENSION DAY 2026

The Nutrition Society of Nigeria (NSN), Akwa Ibom State Chapter, in collaboration with the Dietitians Association of Nigeria (DAN) and with the support of the Wife of the Uyo Local Government Area Chairman, Mrs. Akaninyene Uwemedimo Udo, commemorated the 2026 World Hypertension Day with a four-day public health awareness campaign held from 17th–20th May, 2026, in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

The campaign commenced on the 17th May 2026, with community outreach activities at Qua Iboe Church, Oku, Ikot Ekpene Road, and Streams of Joy International, Uyo. More than 500 congregants benefited from free blood pressure screening, height and weight measurements, nutrition education sessions, and personalized dietary counselling focused on the prevention and management of hypertension.

On the 18th May 2026, the advocacy campaign extended to the media through radio sensitization programmes aired on AKBC Radio and Redemption FM. The programmes reached a broad audience across the state with key messages on hypertension risk factors, healthy dietary practices, lifestyle modification, and the importance of regular blood pressure monitoring. In addition, a live television session was held on AKBC TV, featuring expert discussions and practical health guidance for viewers.

The commemoration concluded on the 20th May 2026, with an outreach session at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH). Patients, caregivers, and healthcare workers received health talks, nutrition education, and one-on-one counselling sessions on hypertension prevention and management.

The event brought together active members of both DAN and NSN, whose participation contributed significantly to the success of the campaign.

The NSN Akwa Ibom State Chapter appreciates all members, partners, and stakeholders, especially the Wife of the Uyo Local Government Area Chairman, Mrs. Akaninyene Uwemedimo Udo, for their support and dedication towards this important public health initiative and remains committed to sustaining community-focused health promotion activities throughout the year.
