On 6th May 2026, executives of the NSN Kano State Chapter paid an advocacy visit to the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) to present a brief on potential areas of collaboration aimed at strengthening consumer protection in nutrition-related matters.
During the meeting, discussions focused on protecting consumers’ rights and ensuring that individuals receive value for their money with regard to food products. Key concerns highlighted included false and misleading nutrition claims on food labels, the circulation of fake, substandard, and expired food products, as well as unhealthy food marketing practices, particularly those targeting children and vulnerable consumers who may not be aware of their rights.
The Chapter also emphasized the role of the Nutrition Society of Nigeria in providing technical nutrition support, training, public awareness campaigns, research, and market surveillance activities. A proposal for the development of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was presented to guide collaborative efforts in the areas of enforcement, public education, reporting mechanisms, capacity building, and monitoring of food label compliance and misleading nutrition claims.
The meeting had a total of 11 participants, comprising four representatives from the NSN Kano State Chapter and seven representatives from the FCCPC.
