NSN Kano State Chapter Commemorates World Obesity Day 2026

In commemoration of World Obesity Day 2026, NSN Kano state chapter organized a Medical Nutrition Therapy Masterclass and Clinical Breakout Session on 4th March 2026 via Microsoft Teams. The session had 34 participants including dietitians and other health professionals interested in strengthening their knowledge and practice in obesity management.

The event commenced with an opening address from the Chairperson, who provided an overview of World Obesity Day, highlighting its purpose, global and national obesity statistics, and current interventions being implemented to address the growing burden of obesity.

The first presentation was delivered by DTN Isaiah, who gave a comprehensive session on Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) for obesity management. His presentation covered key aspects including nutritional assessment tools, individualized goal setting, and dietary interventions. He also provided an in-depth explanation of bariatric surgery procedures and their role in obesity treatment. The session was highly interactive cand revealed existing gaps in specialized obesity management, cwhile also sparking interest among participants to further explore this field of practice.

This was followed by a presentation from Physiotherapist Muhammad Abdullahi Mohammad, who spoke on the role of physical activity and lifestyle interventions in obesity management. He discussed different types of exercise, their benefits, common barriers to adherence, and strategies to support long-term lifestyle changes. His presentation highlighted the strong synergy between physiotherapy and clinical nutrition in the comprehensive management of obesity.

Participants were later divided into smaller groups for clinical breakout sessions, where they analyzed and discussed real-life obesity cases. This interactive segment allowed participants to apply theoretical knowledge to practical scenarios before reconvening to present their findings to the general audience.

The masterclass was widely described by participants as engaging and insightful, offering a more practical learning experience compared to traditional webinars.

The session further emphasized the importance of multidisciplinary collaboration and continuous professional development in addressing the growing burden of obesity.
