The Nutrition Society of Nigeria (NSN), Katsina State Chapter, successfully held its 1st Annual Workshop and General Meeting on 24–25 June 2026, bringing together government officials, nutrition professionals, development partners, academia, and other key stakeholders to strengthen efforts towards improving nutrition outcomes in the state.
Declaring the workshop open, the Executive Governor of Katsina State, His Excellency, Malam Dikko Umar Radda, PhD, CON, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to tackling malnutrition, describing nutrition as both a moral responsibility and a strategic investment in the state’s future. The Governor highlighted ongoing government investments in the health sector, including the revitalisation of 268 Primary Health Centres, the commitment of ₦1.7 billion to the State Nutrition Programme, counterpart funding for the ANRiN Project 2.0, recruitment of over 800 healthcare personnel, and the establishment of additional Outpatient Therapeutic Programme (OTP) and stabilisation centres for the management of severe acute malnutrition.
He further emphasised that addressing malnutrition requires sustained behavioural change, strengthened nutrition education, community participation, promotion of exclusive breastfeeding, improved maternal nutrition, and greater utilisation of locally available nutritious foods.
The workshop also featured goodwill messages and technical contributions from distinguished speakers, including the Statistician-General of Katsina State, Professor Kabir Ibrahim Matazu; the NSN Vice President (North), Dr. Maimuna L. Aliyu; the Chairperson of the Katsina State Committee on Nutrition, Hajiya Rukayya Hamza Usman; and the Kanwan Katsina, Alhaji Usman Bello. The speakers underscored the importance of collaboration among government, professional bodies, development partners, and communities in advancing nutrition and public health.
The event also recognised individuals who have made outstanding contributions to nutrition and public service through the presentation of Awards of Excellence.
