Nutrition Society of Nigeria Oyo State Chapter Celebrates World Hypertension Day 2026

The Nutrition Society of Nigeria (Oyo State Chapter), in collaboration with the Oyo State Ministry of Health, the Department of Human Nutrition and Dietetics, College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, and the Nigerian Heart Foundation, successfully commemorated the 2026 World Hypertension Day on May 20, 2026.

The event, themed “Controlling Hypertension Together,” was held at the KAAF Auditorium, Department of Human Nutrition, University of Ibadan, and brought together healthcare professionals, academics, public health stakeholders, and students to promote awareness on hypertension prevention and management.

A major highlight of the programme was the launch of the Nutrition and Dietetics Services Unit Free Consultation initiative, aimed at improving access to nutrition and health consultation services for members of the public.

The event featured insightful discussions on the importance of healthy nutrition, regular blood pressure monitoring, physical activity, and lifestyle modifications in reducing the burden of hypertension and cardiovascular diseases.

Distinguished dignitaries present at the event included the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Prof. K.O. Adebowale, represented as Chief Host; the Provost, College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, Prof. Temidayo O. Ogundiran; the Dean, Faculty of Public Health, Professor M.D. Dairo; and Dr. Shirley I. Ejoh, Ag. Head, Department of Human Nutrition and Dietetics, University of Ibadan.

Also in attendance were Dr. Oluyemisi F. Folasire, Chairperson of the Nutrition Society of Nigeria (Oyo State Chapter), and Dr. Serimi Ajetunmobi, Honourable Commissioner for Health, Oyo State, who attended as Special Guest of Honour.

The collaboration between the participating organizations further emphasized the importance of multi-sector partnerships in addressing hypertension and promoting preventive healthcare within communities.

The programme concluded with renewed calls for increased public awareness, healthier lifestyle choices, routine health screenings, and stronger community engagement in combating hypertension.
