As part of the activities marking the National Nutrition Week 2025, the Nutrition Society of Nigeria (NSN), Bauchi State Chapter, conducted a community outreach at Gubi Community on 27th November 2025. The outreach aimed to improve community knowledge on appropriate complementary feeding, promote the use of locally available foods, and assess the nutritional status of under-five children.
Activities Conducted included:
- Courtesy Visit:
A courtesy visit was paid to the District Head of Gubi to introduce the team, explain the objectives of the outreach, and secure community cooperation. Mothers, caregivers, and community members were gathered and sensitized for full participation in the sessions and demonstrations.
The Chairperson of NSN Bauchi Chapter delivered the opening remarks and emphasized the significance of sustainable and community-based nutrition practices.
Goodwill messages were presented by representatives from Alheri Foundation and Cascade Project, highlighting their continued support for nutrition improvement initiatives.
- Nutrition Education Session:
The Assistant Secretary-General, Vice Chairman, Financial Secretary, and other members of the Association facilitated an extensive session focusing on:
- When to introduce complementary feeds (from 6 months).
- How to prepare hygienic, safe, and age-appropriate meals.
- What foods to give, emphasizing dietary diversity and nutrient-rich options.
- The importance of using locally available and affordable ingredients when preparing complementary foods.
- Cooking Demonstration:
A cooking demonstration was conducted by the Assistant Secretary-General, Secretary-General, and another member of the association. The team demonstrated step-by-step preparation of Tom Brown, highlighting hygiene, consistency, and nutrient value. Prepared Tom Brown was shared with mothers of under-five children to taste, encourage acceptance, and promote home preparations.
- Nutritional Assessment:
Nutritional assessment of children was carried out by all executive members and members present. Activities included MUAC measurement, weight and height assessment, and caregiver counselling. The majority of children assessed fell within normal nutritional status. A few cases of Moderate Acute Malnutrition (MAM) were identified, caregivers were counselled and referred for follow-up.
- Distribution of Incentives:
Incentives were distributed to all audience members present to appreciate participation and encourage continuous attendance in future nutrition activities.
The outreach conducted on 27th November 2025 was successful and achieved its intended goals. The programme strengthened community awareness on complementary feeding, promoted the use of local foods for home-made recipes, and helped identify children needing further nutritional support. NSN Bauchi State Chapter remains committed to supporting community nutrition and expanding outreach to more underserved areas.
