NUTRITION SOCIETY OF NIGERIA CELEBRATES WORLD FOOD SAFETY DAY 2022
WORLD FOOD SAFETY DAY 2022
World Food Safety Day is commemorated to draw attention and gear up actions to prevent, spot, and manage foodborne risks as well as improve human health. This festival is observed every 7th day of June.
Safe eating is a goal for everyone, whether rich or poor, old or young. This year’s World Food Safety Day theme focuses on the role that safe and nutritious food plays in maintaining human health.
With an estimate of 600million cases or more of foodborne sickness yearly, unsafe food is indeed a plague to human health and economy. Reports from studies estimate that about 120,000 people die every year from food and waterborne diseases hence the increased awareness of food safety.
Good to know:
▪ Today, WHO aims to launch a campaign organizing to inspire global participation. The campaign stresses the need to transform food systems to deliver better health in a sustainable manner in order to prevent most foodborne diseases.
▪ Safe food is one of the most critical guarantors of good health. Unsafe foods are the cause of many diseases and contribute to other poor health conditions, such as impaired growth and development, micronutrient deficiencies, non-communicable or communicable diseases, and mental illness.
▪ Unsafe food containing harmful bacteria, viruses, parasites, or chemical substances causes more than 200 diseases.
▪ Good hygiene practices in the food and agricultural sectors help to reduce the emergence and spread of foodborne diseases.
▪ Practicing safe food handling and handwashing are key steps to preventing food poisoning- and ensuring better health!
▪ With the aim of World Hunger Day in view, the global community is dedicated to finding sustainable solutions for the food insecurity affecting a considerable population across the world.
On this World Food Safety Day, we are reminded that from farm to table, everyone has a part to play to ensure that the food we consume is healthy and safe.
Nutrition Society of Nigeria joins the World Health Organisation, Food and Agricultural Organisation, and other relevant organizations in the celebration of the 2022 World Food Safety Day and together we make the call to action for safe food – Ensure it’s safe, Grow it safe, Keep it safe, Eat it safe and Team up for safety.
