River State NSN chapter celebrates World Breastfeeding Week 2025

Rivers State Chapter joined the rest of the world to commomerate the 2025 World Breastfeeding Week with the theme: Prioritize Breastfeeding: Create Sustainable Support Systems.

During this year’s WBW, the state chapter is collaborating with Rivers State Ministry of Health, Rivers State Primary Health Management Board, Rivers State University Teaching Hospital, University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital and Lion Club of Port Harcourt.

Activities scheduled to celebrate World Breastfeeding Week include:

Day 1: 1st August, 2025- Rally/road work from Agip Junction flyover to Mile 1 market/ Education Bus Stop. This rally was conducted to raise awareness on the importance of breastfeeding in the community.

The Flag off and lecture was conducted at the Rivers State Ministry of Health, Rivers State Secretariat complex. The Flag off of 2025 WBW was initiated by Prof Chituru Orluwene, Senior Special Adviser to the Rivers State Administrator. Dr Vincent Wachukwu Acting Permanent Secretary of the ministry gave the opening remarks. During the flag off ceremony a lecture was presented on breastfeeding by Prof Alice Nte a paediatrician from (UPTH). The State Nutrition Officer, Mrs. Gloria Wokocha gave the vote of thanks. The ceremony was a collaborative effort with Directors of the ministry, CS-SUNN, CSOs and NSN members.

Day 2: Sensitization campaign at Seventh Day Adventist Church, Mile 3, Port Harcourt.

Day 3: Breastfeeding sensitization campaign at St Andrew’s Anglican Church, Rumuola Deanery, Port Harcourt.

Day 4: Health and nutrition education message at Rumiekpirikom MPHC, Port Harcourt.

Day 5: Nutrition education message/ presentation of gifts to mother/Child pair at Rivers State University Teaching Hospital, Port Harcourt.

Day 6: Nutrition education and presentation of gifts at Orogbum MPHC, Port Harcourt.

Day 7: Nutrition education/ presentation of gifts at Rumuolumini MPHC.
