Osun State Chapter Commemorates 2025 World Breastfeeding Week

The Nutrition Society of Nigeria (NSN), Osun State Chapter celebrated the 2025 World Breastfeeding Week. This year’s event focused on educating, supporting, and empowering breastfeeding mothers across the state. In line with the global theme, “Prioritize Breastfeeding: Create Sustainable Support Systems,” the chapter emphasized the need for collaborative and culturally accepted interventions to improve breastfeeding practices.

This year’s celebration was celebrated at different zonal areas, with active participation from the Osogbo, Ilesha, and Ile-Ife zones. Each zone carried out awareness and education sessions within their communities to promote exclusive breastfeeding and highlight the importance of creating sustainable support systems for nursing mothers.

Key highlights of events:

August 1st – Osogbo Zone Sensitization Outreach: The Osogbo Zone kicked off WBW with a sensitization visit to the Central Mosque, Ogo-Oluwa, led by the State Nutrition Officer, Mrs. Rasheedat Popoola. She also appeared on OSBC Radio 104.5 FM, where she discussed the theme in the Yoruba language to ensure broad community understanding. Her message encouraged exclusive breastfeeding and called for stronger social and institutional support for nursing mothers.

August 2nd – Statewide Webinar: Making Room for Mums”. A free virtual webinar titled “Making Room for Mums” was hosted via Zoom. The session was anchored by Prof. Beatrice Ogunba and her team, who engaged participants in discussions about strengthening breastfeeding support systems at home, in workplaces, and within communities.

August 6th – Osogbo Zone: Community Engagement at PHC. Oyo state NSN members in Osogbo visited the Olorunsogo Primary Health Centre, where Dtn. Okijiola and others delivered a health talk to nursing mothers at the postnatal clinic. The discussion centered on this year’s WBW theme and the role of families, health workers, and the government in supporting breastfeeding practices.

August 6th to 7th – Ilesha Zone: Outreach at Adeti PHC and Wesley Guild Hospital: The Ilesha Zone marked WBW by visiting PHC Adeti and the Community Health Department, Wesley Guild Hospital, Ilesha. Health professionals conducted educational sessions with breastfeeding mothers, encouraging exclusive breastfeeding and proper nutrition for both mother and child.

August 6th to 7th – Ile-Ife Zone: Health Talk at OAUTHC ANC: The Ile-Ife Zone commemorated the Week with a two-day outreach at the Antenatal Clinic, Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex (OAUTHC), Ile-Ife. Health talks focused on the importance of breastfeeding in the first 1,000 days of life and strategies to create supportive environments for mothers.

The Osun State Chapter continues to advocate for better maternal and child health outcomes through nutrition education and community engagement.
