The Nutrition Society of Nigeria (NSN), Anambra State Chapter, successfully commemorated the 2025 National Nutrition Week with a series of impactful activities conducted across Anambra state.
These activities included:
- Radio Talk Show – UNIZIK 94.1 FM (25th November):
The week opened with a highly engaging radio programme on UNIZIK 94.1 FM, hosted by the Department of Human Nutrition and Dietetics, Nnamdi Azikiwe University. Discussions covered a wide range of topics, including an overview of nutrition as a discipline, the theme and objectives of the National Nutrition Week, adequate nutrition across the life course, consequences of poor nutrition, diabetes management, and the role of food and nutrition policy in improving health outcomes.
Experts from NSN and partner agencies enriched the conversation with evidence-based insights and practical guidance for listeners.
- Road Walk and Community Sensitization (26th November):
This was led by Dr. Rose Amasiani, the State Nutrition Officer. Participants embarked on a community road walk along Secretariat Road to Emeka Anyaoku Boulevard to Solution Bus Terminal and Aroma Junction. Residents received sensitization on healthy eating, the benefits of consuming local foods, regular physical activity, and other healthy lifestyle choices. Educational fliers were shared to reinforce key messages.
- Nutrition Sensitization at Health Care Centres (27th November):
Nutrition education sessions were held at the Maternal and Child Health Centre, Amawbia, and the Primary Health Care Centre, Abubor Nnewi. Participants were sensitized on maternal and child nutrition, adequate diets with emphasis on protein intake, food safety and hygiene, proper infant and young child feeding, and the importance of exclusive breastfeeding. A question-and-answer session followed to address community concerns.
- School Nutrition Education (28th November):
The team visited Theoma Favour International Secondary School and Fishers Model Academy, Awka. The students were educated on healthy eating habits, the importance of fruits, vegetables, hydration, and daily breakfast. They were encouraged to choose locally available foods such as vegetables, fruits, legumes, grains and fish, while reducing salt, sugar, and highly processed foods. Practical nutrition materials were also distributed to support their learning.
