NSN AKWA IBOM CHAPTER COMMEMORATES WORLD DIABETES DAY 2025 WITH TWO-DAY COMMUNITY OUTREACH AND FREE HEALTH SCREENING

The Nutrition Society of Nigeria (NSN), Akwa Ibom State Chapter, in collaboration with the Akwa Ibom State Primary Health Care Development Agency (AKS-NPHCDA), has successfully organized a two-day community sensitization and screening programme to commemorate World Diabetes Day 2025, aimed at raising awareness on diabetes prevention, early detection, and lifestyle modification.

The event held on November 13 and 14, 2025, and was supported by partner organizations including CODIX, Uyo Local Government Council, and the World Health Organization (WHO). The screening exercise was officially flagged off by the Secretary to Uyo Local Government Area, Hon. Ubong Udofia, accompanied by Hon. Praise Otuekong, Supervisory Councillor for Health, and Hon. Enobong Okon, Supervisory Councillor for Medium and Small-Scale Business.

Activities began with a live radio advocacy programme that provided public education on the causes, symptoms, complications, and preventive measures for diabetes. The session emphasized healthy diets, regular physical activity, early diagnosis, and routine monitoring as crucial strategies to reduce risk and improve long-term wellness.

On World Diabetes Day, November 14, the chapter held a community health road walk, followed by a health seminar and technical session where experts addressed topics such as healthy eating patterns, portion control, lifestyle modification, routine medical screening, and evidence-based diabetes prevention practices. A food demonstration session also highlighted culturally appropriate and affordable meal preparation for healthier living.

To further support public health action, the event featured free blood sugar screening, blood pressure checks, and Body Mass Index (BMI) assessments. Participants received one-on-one counseling, nutrition guidance, and referral services where necessary.

Speaking at the event, the Chairperson of NSN Akwa Ibom, Prof. Yetunde Alozie, reiterated the Society’s commitment to promoting evidence-driven health and nutrition initiatives.

“Diabetes is a preventable and manageable condition when people have the right information, supportive environments, and access to routine health checks. Our focus is to empower communities with practical knowledge and create partnerships that sustain wellbeing,” the Chapter leadership stated.

Government representatives commended NSN and partners for their proactive intervention and reaffirmed their readiness to support programmes that strengthen community health, prevention services, and grassroots awareness.

The NSN Akwa Ibom State Chapter announced plans to expand its outreach program to workplaces, schools, and additional local government areas, in alignment with national calls to prioritize preventive healthcare, nutrition, and wellness promotion.
