The Nutrition Society of Nigeria (NSN), Lagos State Chapter, successfully conducted a Nutrition Education Outreach Programme at Emerald Primary School, Gbagada, Lagos on 2nd July 2026. The outreach, themed “Healthy Eating for Smart Learning and Strong Growth,” was organized in response to an invitation from the school as part of NSN’s commitment to promoting healthy nutrition and lifestyle practices among school-aged children.The programme aimed to equip pupils and teachers with practical knowledge on healthy eating habits using the Healthy Plate concept, while strengthening the visibility of the Society and fostering collaboration with educational institutions.The outreach commenced with opening remarks by Mrs. Eddidiong, who welcomed the pupils, teachers, and school management. She introduced the Nutrition Society of Nigeria, Lagos State Chapter, highlighted the objectives of the programme, and encouraged active participation throughout the session.The keynote nutrition education session was delivered by Mrs. Amaka Nwaora on the theme, “Healthy Eating for Smart Learning and Strong Growth.” The interactive presentation emphasized the importance of consuming a balanced diet, understanding the Healthy Plate concept, making healthy food choices, and recognizing the role of fruits, vegetables, energy-giving foods, body-building foods, and water in promoting growth, learning, and disease prevention. Pupils actively participated by responding to questions and sharing their experiences.A practical demonstration of the Healthy Plate was facilitated by Mrs. Uchechi Umeche using familiar Nigerian foods. The demonstration illustrated how half of the plate should consist of fruits and vegetables, one-quarter should contain energy-giving foods, and the remaining quarter should contain body-building foods, with water recommended as the preferred beverage. This practical session enabled the pupils to better understand how to prepare balanced meals using foods commonly available in their homes.To reinforce the lessons learned, an engaging nutrition quiz was conducted by Mrs. Eddidiong. Pupils enthusiastically answered questions on healthy eating, food groups, and the Healthy Plate concept, with winners receiving educational prizes that further encouraged active participation.The programme was comprehensively documented through photography and video coverage by Miss Jennifer Akunyili, ensuring that key moments of the outreach were captured for reporting and future advocacy.The outreach recorded several positive outcomes, including improved awareness of healthy eating practices, enhanced understanding of the Healthy Plate concept, increased participation during nutrition education sessions, and positive feedback from both pupils and teachers. The programme also strengthened the visibility of the Nutrition Society of Nigeria, Lagos State Chapter, within the education sector.The Society expresses its sincere appreciation to the management, staff, and pupils of Emerald Primary School for their warm reception and enthusiastic participation.
