It is with deep sorrow but total submission to the will of God that the National Executive Council and the entire members of the Nutrition Society of Nigeria announce the demise of our member and immediate past Financial Secretary.
A SHORT BIOGRAPHY OF LATE PROF. KOKOETE EKERETE EKPO
Prof. Kokoete Ekerete Ekpo, popularly known as K. E. Ekpo, hailed from Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria and was born on 2nd May, 1959 in Lagos State, Nigeria. He started his educational career after obtaining his West Africa School Certificate, WASC in 1977. He thereafter proceeded to the University of Port Harcourt where he obtained his B.Sc. (Hons.) in Biochemistry in 1983. As required by the government for National Service, he was deployed to the then Bendel State University (now Ambrose Alli University), Ekpoma as a Youth Corps member in the Department of Biochemistry.
Recognizing his academic prowess, he was immediately employed as a Graduate Assistant by the University, this small step kept him permanently in Ekpoma for the remaining part of his life. He immediately embarked on further studies by enrolling for his Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree in the University of Benin where he obtained his M.Sc. degree in Biochemistry in 1989. He finally capped his studies with a Ph.D in 2003 from Ambrose Alli University Ekpoma. As his study progressed, he routinely earned promotions through the academic rank and was pronounced a Professor with effect from 1st October, 2011 by the University.
In his service to the University, he held several positions at different times; including Examination Officer, Project and Seminar Coordinator, Departmental Admission Officer and immediate past Head of Department. He served in various committees in the University. He also served as Head of Department of Medical Biochemistry, Niger Delta University and Head of Department of Biological Sciences, Federal University, Otuoke, Nigeria. He was well published, having over 38 articles, conference proceedings and chapters in a book along with being the sole author of a book in his main area of research; “Edible worms and insects”. He attended several conferences where he presented papers.
He was a member of many professional bodies such as Biochemical and Molecular Biology of Nigeria, American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Institute of Public Analysts of Nigeria and Nutrition Society of Nigeria where he served meritoriously in the Executive Council as the Financial Secretary from year 2013 to 2016.
In his sojourn on earth, Prof. K. E. Ekpo was happily married and blessed with three children he was very proud of. He was a dedicated Christian who was ever ready to forgive and forget a wrong. He was an active member of The Deeper Christian Life Ministry, Ekpoma Region, Federal Road Safety Corps Special Marshal, Ekpoma Unit and was an Adviser to Emuado Community Youth Association. He had an infectious laughter which no one could fail to recognise in his Faculty.
He will certainly be missed by all. May his gentle soul rest in peace.
